Chronic Pain SyndromeWhat Is Chronic Pain Syndrome

Chronic pain syndrome is difficult to define due to its complex nature. In general pain lasting for longer than 3 to 6 months constitutes cronic pain.

Chronic pain can be quite disabling and lead people to feelings of isolation, anger, frustration, guilt and in extreme cases suicide.

 Chronic Pain Causes

Causes of chronic pain may arise from medical conditions or injuries. The following conditions may be associated with chronic pain:

fibromyalgia

spinal injury

headaches- (from concussions)

back injury

arthritis

nerve inflammation

Many people look for a chronic pain center for treatment and support of their pain. For some people there is pain that does not have an identifiable cause. This is not to say that the pain is not real. It is not for us to judge. In any case the pain is real and needs to be treated.

Treatments for Chronic Pain

People who suffer from long term pain need a chronic pain treatment plan. These chronic pain treatments will vary from pain medication to electrical pain relieving units to acupuncture and massage therapy

Here are some of the more common areas that need treatment:

chronic muscle pain

chronic joint pain

chronic knee pain (may lead to knee replacement)

chronic leg treatment

chronic shoulder pain

Chronic Back Pain Management

The most common area for chronic pain in the body is the lower back.

Something as simple as reaching to open a door or bending to pick up a child may lead to back pain. If we ignore the small bit of stiffness or discomfort it will become debilitating and effect our ability for daily active living activities.

At this stage chronic back treatment is necessary for people who suffer long standing low back pain.

Massage therapy gives some temporary pain relief.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Complex regional pain syndrome is a chronic disease identified by severe pain , swelling and changes in the skin.

It often effects an arm or leg and may spread to another part of the body.

It requires comprehensive pain management similar to neuropathic pain treatment.

At this time the cause of the syndrome is unknown and makes it challenging to resolve.

Generally a multidisciplinary approach that includes medication and various forms of physical therapy is used for treatment of this condition.
